Lincoln Archaeology Group is supporting our former chair Brian Porter (right) with this important ongoing project covering all of Lincolnshire. The project aims to systematically record all ancient graffiti in each Lincolnshire church, using non-invasive methods.
Until recently, medieval church graffiti has been largely ignored. Most people, including those who regularly visit churches, are unaware of this remarkable and informal art, carved over the centuries into the stone and wood of our religious buildings. Many of the images have secret meanings and significances largely forgotten in modern times.
In 2013, inspired by the work of the Norfolk Medieval Graffiti Survey, the Lincoln Medieval Graffiti project was formed with the aim of visiting all of the county's 600 churches. With several hundred churches still on our list, there is plenty of work to be done.
The project is entirely self funded, using trained volunteers. Training is free and with so many churches as yet unrecorded there is likely to be one near you, its secrets just waiting to be unlocked.
