Summer Dig 2022 - BGU at The Lawn, Lincoln

Updated: Jul 11, 2023

Lincoln Archaeology Group volunteers supported this year’s Bishop Grosseteste University Field School at The Lawn, Lincoln which ran from June 20th to July 22nd. Members worked to pass on their knowledge and experience and many of our student members were also involved. LAG also assisted with the set up and close down weeks.

The Lawn is an important site in the heart of historic Lincoln. Located next to Lincoln Castle, just 150m to the west of Lincoln’s former Roman and Medieval upper walled city, the site sits on the edge of the limestone ridge that overlooks the Witham Valley. Small-scale excavations in the grounds of The Lawn were undertaken in the 1980s, and they uncovered evidence of possible pre-Roman activity in the area. Additionally, a small Roman urn excavated from the site in the mid-nineteenth century indicates that there might be a Roman cemetery at The Lawn.

The BGU Field School found a wide range of artefacts, from pre-roman to Victorian, and post-excavation processing is under way at our Wednesday afternoon sessions and an update on the results will be available at the end of the year.
